Five weeks in, and I’d say it’s been nice of us long-time members of the Smarter Than Phil Simms Fantasy League to let Joe Buck’s Enormous Forehead make it to 5-0. We’re all very gracious hosts.
Though honestly, it’s not like we’ve LET him per se. He’s does have the most points in the league (610.5, 38 more than 2nd place DVD). Though, we also don’t put up much fight against him; he’s got the fewest points against in the league (397.5, 54 points less than 2nd place). Guys, we’re not even putting up 80 points a game against him!
So in a way, it IS like we’re letting him. But he’s also earned it, along with 2 Tidwells on the season.
We’ve also had another tie this year (though not for the same reason the Commanders and Giants tied), which might matter for playoff position later on. We’re a little early to be worrying about that. Especially when the ESPN Standings have 80% of the league with a greater than 50% chance of making the playoffs. I’ll probably do a bigger write-up (or video?) in a couple weeks, for our Midseason Report with more analysis on the stats. For now, just looking at the standings you get an idea of who might be in trouble.
Iron Ryan is 0-5, but he needed a Monday Night Miracle (in the form of a Khalil Shakir 57 yard catch) to lose to Joe Buck’s Fivehead this week. He’s got the second fewest points for, and the second most points against, so it’s not like he’s snakebitten exactly.
For comparison, here’s the actual standings compared to the Points For:
Our top 2 teams (Fivehead and DVD) are right where they’re supposed to be, based on points. Pickles could be higher in the standings, but he put up sub-90 point weeks in Week 1 and 2, while “giving up” more than 150 each week (though he did win Week 3 130-74.5). The Effect is in the top half of the standings and points, so no qualms there (of course not, it’s ME!) Boobies and I’ron Ry’An are pretty much where they should be, based on their putrid point totals.
Which brings us to Dancin Dennis, who’s going to complain. But his Week 1 performance of 156 points carries a lot of the weight in his point total; he’s only broken 100 one other time.
Team Provost could argue being unlucky: he lost to the Tidwell winner this past week, while putting up the 3rd-highest point total. But he’s also got the tie (at 87 points), and 2 wins where his opponent didn’t break 100. You could also argue he’s LUCKY, because without the tie, he’s in 7th, not 5th.
Hardcore probably deserves a better fate, given that he’s allowed almost 108 points per game so far. He also put up a sub-70 point week (while giving up 117).
As I write this, I’m watching one of the best looking games you’ll see in the NFL this year, with the Elway Orange Broncos unis and the Steve Largent era Blue Seahawks jerseys. This is the kind of game that makes me love football.
Though Tim and I had the chance to see an equally great uniform matchup on Sunday with the red Pat Patriots and the white-with-silver-numbers Raiders. Thanks Provost!
We’ll see how this week goes. Will Fivehead hit 6-0? Will I-Ry get off the winless train? We find out in a couple days!
